Abstract

The present study was carried out on all the Women Councillors of Municipal Corporations in Haryana. The study is descriptive and exploratory in nature. At present, there are 83 female councillors in Haryana but only 80 female councillors responded in the survey. The present study has focused to know the socio-economic profile of the female councillors. This study explains that majority of the respondents (72.6%) were from the higher income group, i.e., Rs. >8 lacs per annum and have their own houses (100–400 yards). Majority of respondents, i.e., 81% acquired their education > 10+2 level and earned their income from business (45%) and cultivations (31.2%) as a major source of their livelihood. The study highlights that respondent's fathers are more educated in comparison to their mothers. The study shows that maximum numbers of women, in the younger age groups, enter into the politics. Maximum respondents (86.2%) preferred private school for their children/wards. The study reveals that maximum respondent, i.e., 98.8% favoured women education due to the dire need of the time. The trends of present study show that the discriminatory patterns in the form of female education in Indian society are speedily diluting. Maximum respondents (81.2%) did not prefer to engage their children in their present occupation and prefer Govt. Services for their children/wards.
