Abstract
Kerala’s economy has been influenced by the remittances from the Gulf for many years. Generally, the huge consumption of luxury items, easy way of life, increasing liabilities, decreasing agricultural production, etc. are considered to be the detrimental effects of migration. The present study examined the socio-economic impact of migration on the Gulf-migrant households and how they differ from the non-migrant households. The main objectives of this study were to explore the causes of migration from Kerala to the Middle East countries, to examine the economic and social characteristics of migrant and non-migrant households in Kerala, and to study the impact of migration on the emigrants, their households, and the region from which they migrated. Given the cross-sectional and time dimensions of the data, we employ a panel data model for annual data from the period 2011–2016. The same households were observed over the study period. Panel analysis is a powerful method for estimating changes over a period of time with less sampling bias. A logistic regression analysis was done to study the impact of migration.
