Abstract

Abstract This chapter advances a sociocultural practice model for addressing Latino psychosocial and health problems in a contextualized manner that maximizes the probability of effective assessment and intervention. Relevant constructs such as cultural sensitivity, competence, and humility are critiqued including a brief review of the outcome literature on the components of cultural competence and its effectiveness. Practice model dimensions (availability and access; problem assessment in sociocultural context, interventions congruent with assessment, and accountability to clients) are discussed in relation to the Latino social and cultural experience in America, including an ecological-systems framework for illuminating needed multilevel (micro, meso, and macro) practice approaches.
