Abstract
Sample analyses are provided to show how political terms in vogue during China's Cultural Revolution developed colloquial meanings at variance with the official “dictionary.” Responses to these terms of subjects, most of whom were at that time in Kwangtung and Fukien Provinces, constitute the empirical data. A methodology with anthropological overtones is developed to meet the exigencies of handling such data.
