Abstract

The author was formerly chairman of the Department of Sociology at Lebanon Valley College, the author is now a member of the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. Extended travel in Italy has given him an opportunity to gain insights into historical and contemporary aspects of criminology and penology in that country. The present article is a contribution to historical penology, and is allied to Dr. Wolfgang's previous publication of Political Crimes and Punishments in Renaissance Florence in our Volume 44, number 5, January-February 1954.-EDITOR.
