Abstract

The Society of Toxicology (SOT) is a professional and scholarly organization of scientists from academic institutions, government, and industry that represents the multifaceted scientists who practice toxicology in the United States and abroad. The SOT was founded in 1961 as a non-profit organization. It is governed by an elected Council comprised of 13 members and it is managed by an executive director and staff in the Reston, Virginia. The Society's activities are highly diverse and are assisted by the efforts of 3 elected and 14 appointed committees and task forces. The current missions including serving the needs of the scientific discipline and its members to enhance human, animal, and environmental health; life-long learning and intellectual scientific stimulation; diversity of representation in all activities of the Society; and integrity. The SOT promotes the development and integration of innovative basic and applied toxicology to enhance human, animal, and environmental health, while remaining in accordance with the SOT Code of Ethics. The Society has a strong commitment to education in toxicology and to the recruitment of students and new members into the profession. It is also committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion through all of its activities. SOT has a number of mechanisms to recognize high achievers in the discipline and makes numerous awards at its annual meetings.
