Abstract

President Dow, members of the Society, and guests: The SEG Silver Medal is awarded for “excellence in original work in the geology of mineral deposits” to scientists who are mid-career. Holly Stein is the recipient for 2005; she is an excellent geo-scientist highly worthy of this important award. The impact of Holly Stein’s research is far reaching, being concerned, foremost, with mineral deposit geology, but now having considerable relevance and application in fields as diverse as tectonic reconstructions, regional metamorphism, and timing of early Earth processes. In addition to this wide impact, the breadth of her research endeavors warrants special mention. Many of us focus our research on the origin of a particular mineral deposit class, or perhaps on developing and testing new methods and techniques for analysis, whereas others specialize in the synthesis of data sets to try and generate new understanding of major problems in mineral deposit geology. Holly Stein’s research has contributed significantly in all of these areas. In terms of her original contributions to mineral deposit geology, Holly Stein’s most recognizable and valuable research relates …
