Abstract
Abstract The Division of the Psychology of Women was formally established in 1973 as Division 35 of the American Psychological Association (APA). Its name was changed to the Society for the Psychology of Women in 1991, and today the division is known to its members both as Division 35 and SPW. The impetus for the founding of the division came from women's social and political activism in the late 1960s, especially from members of the Association for Women in Psychology (AWP), which was founded in 1969. AWP and SPW continue to work together today by cosponsoring a hospitality suite during APA conventions and a prize for student research on the psychology of women and gender.
