Abstract

Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies Graduate Student Essay Winner 2012 Jonathan A. Seitz The Society is pleased to announce that P. J. Johnston is the winner of the 2012 SBCS Graduate-Student Essay Competition. Johnston is a doctoral candidate in religious studies at the University of Iowa and originally wrote the paper for a course with Frederick M. Smith. Her dissertation is a “multi-site ethnographic research of Tamil popular Catholicism in India and Réunion.” Her essay, “Dharma Bums: The Beat Generation and the Making of Counter-Cultural Pilgrimage,” was presented at ten thirty a.m. Saturday, November 17, during the SBCS session in Chicago. The SBCS Graduate Student Essay Competition was started in hopes of attracting greater student participation in the Society and encouraging scholars early in their work to engage Buddhist-Christian studies.
