Abstract

The Journal of ProtozoologyVolume 28, Issue 4 p. 499-502 Society Business† First published: November 1981 https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1550-7408.1981.tb05329.x † This is a report devoted primarily to a condensation of the Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting and of the Business Meeting of the Society of Protozoologists convened during the VI International Congress of Protozoology held in Warsaw, Poland, 5–11 July 1981. The official 34th Annual Meeting of the Society is scheduled for the last week of December 1981 in Dallas, Texas, in conjunction with the meeting there of the American Society of Zoologists. (The 33rd Meeting of the Society of Protozoologists was held at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in June 1980.) ‡ A few additional comments of historical interest might be made here, with the realization that the Society membership and the readership in general may be a bit confused by some apparent inconsistencies over the years in what are considered “Annual Meetings” of the Society and where/when reports of these are published. Typically, through the year 1979, our meetings have been held in the summer—time, generally in conjunction with the AlBS meetings, and a Supplement of Abstracts (plus data on time of sessions, etc.) has appeared at the time of (orjust preceding) those meetings. Minutes of the Executive Committee and of the Business Meeting—combined as “Society Business”—were then published in a subsequent number of the Journd, usually February of the following year. Four kinds of exceptions have from time to time disrupted the orderliness made possible by the system described above: meetings held independently, meetings held in late December, meetings convened with International Congresses of Protozoology, and problems in meeting the Journal's “copy deadline.” § Without going into details, one may note (with the advantage of hindsight) that the situation with respect to the International Congresses has perhaps been a little irregular. At Prague in 1961 (Congress I), the Society's meeting was called the 13th Annual Meeting. Then a 14th was convened in Denver in December 1961, making two “annual meetings” in that year. At London in 1965 (Congress 11). the Society held its own 18th meeting, with none other elsewhere that year. At Clermont—Ferrand in 1973 (Congress IV), the Society's activities were unnumbered, and the 26th meeting was the one convened in Houston in December 1973. At New York in 1977 (Congress V), the Annual Meeting was called the 30th and no other was held elsewhere. Now, in 1981, the Society Business carried out at the July Congress (VI) in Warsaw, reported on these pages, is unnumbered, with the 34th meeting scheduled for Texas later this year. ¶ Abstracts for sessions of the forthcoming 34th Annual Meeting in Dallas—plus accumulated abstracts of the Associated Societies around the world—will be published, along with minutes of the December 1981 meetings, in the May 1982 number of this Journal. In future years, the Secretary of the Society, the Program Officer, and I hope to find a way to coordinate such activities in a manner once again permitting much more rapid publication of both Abstracts and Minutes of the Society's regular Meetings.—John O.
