Abstract

Subject. The article considers the formation of Society 5.0, new socio-economic and cultural development concepts of the society. Objectives. The aim is to analyze possible positive and negative consequences of transition to the Society 5.0 concept, advanced technologies used in this process, especially in smart city projects. Methods. The study employs general scientific research methods. Results. We consider the essence of the Society 5.0 concept, identify areas of intersection of this concept with the concept of sustainable development and Industry 4.0, highlight pros and cons of transition to a new stage of development of society with the maximum use of digital technologies, demonstrate practical application of information and communication and digital technologies, i.e. the smart city project. Conclusions. The said transition may have negative implications, like mounting unemployment, growing inequality, increasing ability to manipulate people’s minds, creation of a "digital prison", negative effects on the human brain due to constant use of gadgets. One of the main projects of Society 5.0 is the creation of smart cities. A smart city will provide an opportunity to improve living standards through the use of information and communication technologies, to increase energy efficiency, and to reduce the cost of utilities. The findings may be helpful in the development and implementation of new technologies to create more comfortable living conditions for people.
