Abstract

ABSTRACTThe history of the Irish Republic since 1960 offers an interesting example of considerable societal change but little change in the political parties or party system. Despite fairly rapid urbanization, industrialization, population growth and liberalization, the political changes that have taken place are relatively minor. Party policies, roles, recruitment patterns, strengths and support bases have not changed very much. It is noted that the strongest party seems to have changed least, and it is suggested that this is because it had least need to change.
