Abstract

The approach of the Australian government to diversity within the community provides a perspective from which the future of an increasingly multicultural Australian educational system can be shaped. The Australian federal government’s Social Inclusion Agenda (Australian Government 2010) has heralded an approach to diversity that encourages people of all backgrounds, abilities and experiences to participate in the educational and training process, the workforce, and the community. The vision is underpinned by a philosophy that views diversity as an advantage rather than an obstacle to be overcome. Ideally, this positive view of diversity should be reflected in the Australian schooling system where young people are developing their identity, learning the benefits of participation for all, and forming their attitudes towards diversity, multiculturalism and race.
