Abstract

In this article I differentiate between three types, or degrees, of socialism: social democracy, democratic socialism (Left social democracy), and revolutionary Marxism, and identify key education policies associated with these three broad types, of socialism. I proceed to address four aspects of education: (i) Pedagogy (including critical pedagogy and revolutionary critical pedagogy), (ii) the Curriculum, (iii) the Organization of students and of the education system nationally and (iv) Ownership, control and management of schools, colleges and universities. I conclude by setting out what is specifically Marxist about the proposals set out. These are: (i) reforms, such as social democratic or democratic socialist reforms) are not sustainable under capitalism, (ii) Marxists educators should be activist and revolutionary in seeking to replace capitalism by socialism and (iii) underlying the analysis of capitalist education and society, and socialist education (and social/economic) proposals is the salience of (gendered and “raced”) social class and social class analysis – the Capital-Labor Relation.
