Abstract

Field education has always been recognized as a crucial component of social work education in Canada, codified in the Standards for Accreditation of the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. In the Canadian context, field education is largely delivered by experienced social workers employed in a range of community social service settings and health organizations. These social workers voluntarily agree to provide a practicum for a student and schools of social work train these practitioners to provide effective approaches. This chapter will present information on best practices drawing from relevant theories, empirical studies, and practice wisdom. The chapter will also present the current realities facing Canadian social and health services that challenge the ability to provide this important educational element to prepare the next generation of social work practitioners. The chapter concludes with recommendations to make field education a priority for organizations and social work education programs.
