Abstract

A number of articles in the British press have criticised the Swedish welfare state for taking a disproportionate number of children into care compared with other countries. These allegations are described and their origins investigated through an analysis of pressure group activity. Historical and comparative statistical data are presented to discover whether the allegations are justified. The author concludes that the Swedish child care rate is similar to that of England and Wales, and other Scandinavian countries with the exception of Norway.
