Abstract

The study of environmental influences, and most notably now genetic influences on social support and its relationship to psychopathology has gained further ground. It has been applied to the understanding of the association between ’personality’ perceived judgements of social support, availability of relationships and psychopathology. More is now known of conditional associations between aspects of social support and age, sex, personality and ethnic group status. In clinical practice, these issues need to be considered if clinical interventions are to be more effectively targeted.
