Abstract
In this chapter we trace scientific advancements made in the study of social relations across the life span and over the life course with a particular emphasis on adulthood and aging. We begin with attention to traditional social relations theories, including the convoy model of social relations. Next, we consider empirical investigations to illustrate how increasingly sophisticated developmental theory and methods led to expanded and more nuanced understandings of social relations in adulthood. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the most recent literature available on the convoy model, especially highlighting aspects of social relations that influence stress, health, and well-being. Finally, future directions in the study of social relations are identified. Keywords: social relations; convoy; life span and life course perspectives; stress-buffering; dyadic relations; bidirectional influences
