Abstract

This article describes how social innovation and social entrepreneurship can support the United Nations in meeting the 2030 target year of achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In the United Nations (UN) Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 25 September 2015 it is stated that the UN “call[s] upon all businesses to apply their creativity and innovation to solving sustainable development challenges” (United Nations, General Assembly 2015, p. 29). The world’s development challenges can also represent business opportunities for social innovations. Entrepreneurship can be an important driver, enabler and empowering tool for sustainable development. Especially social entrepreneurs aim to explore market opportunities and to create new (innovative) sustainable solutions for economic, social and/or environmental challenges. Therefore, they are seen as problem-solvers in the areas covered by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
