Abstract

This article discusses central theories relating to the development of social hierarchy and inequality in early civilizations. This is done by offering a theoretical overview at the beginning of the paper, and discussing the development of inequality by offering examples from three early civilizations: the Maya civilization, Southern Mesopotamia, and in Andean South America. This paper culminates in a more detailed discussion of the development of inequality in Maya civilization, providing a more developed case study.
