Abstract

From a small transportation crossroads at the confluence of two major rivers, Harpers Ferry grew into a thriving 19th-century industrial and commercial establishment. A federal armory manufactured guns here from the turn of the 19th century until its destruction during the Civil War. During this period, the master armorer occupied Block B, the focus of this study, in Lower Town Harpers Ferry. After the war, Block B became part of the commercial center of the town, as well as home for leading entrepreneurial families and transient boarders.
