Abstract

This study aims to identify social determinants that influence health of indigenous Asmat society in Papua, Indonesia. The research used a case study qualitative approach. Data source was obtained from Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and in-depth interviews with various key informants to deepen the field findings. Data analysis used was a qualitative technique. This study identifies four main elements of social determinants which affect health behavior of indigenous Asmat society. First, Asmat society has low levels of educational background because lack of accessibility to schools due to the extreme geographical conditions. Second, Asmat culture places women as subordinate groups that create high rates of violence against women. Third, the Catholic Church institution play important role to improve health quality of Asmat society. Culture factors influence the social life of the Asmat community. Especially, the position of women in the Asmat socio-cultural strata.
