Abstract
This article discusses how trenchless construction technologies such as microtunneling can virtually eliminate expensive social costs from the installation of sewer or water pipeline systems. Although it is sometimes more expensive than the traditional open‐cut approach in terms of direct construction costs, microtunneling installations can actually provide extensive savings over the life of a project, in terms of safety as well as the prevention of business and residential disruptions. Plus, using vitrified clay pipe can extend the lifespan of sewer systems for many years, avoiding the need to reinstall new pipes for a long time to come.
