Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the relationship between social cognition and functional outcome in schizophrenia. It review show functional outcome is defined and assessed, studies that examine correlations between different types of social cognition and different aspects of functional outcome, and studies that have used sophisticated modeling techniques to examine how social cognition interacts with neurocognition to impact functional outcome. It concludes by discussing the important implications of these findings for developing new social cognitive intervention approaches that facilitate functional recovery.
