Abstract

Social class analysis is an old tradition in American social science. Late nineteenth-century American social commentary routinely assumed that two great classes, Capital and Labor, dominated American society. Not only academics, social critics, or spokesmen of the labor movement, but also representatives of business interests and government shared this perception. Indeed, the development of a permanent working class, according to Furner, preoccupied many of the earliest professional social scientists, the founders of the American Social Science Association.1
