Abstract

This is a short paper taken from a larger research project. The project explores the optimum design of space and curriculum for the education of practical theologians able to exercise contextually relevant community leadership. This paper argues for serious consideration of the design of the physical space in which the education project is located. Social capital is suggested as a relevant theory, notwithstanding relevant critique, that supports the inclusion of informal spaces in which "intimate conversation" skills and self-awareness can be developed. It also suggests "emotional intelligence" theory as further support for the intentional inclusion of programmatic space along with informal social space. These spaces enable the education of practical theologians capable of leadership that will develop the sustainable internal and external networks necessary for healthy social capital as a positive community resource.
