Abstract

Background: One of the study in a series of researches in semen quality of Chinese males. Objective: To determine the likely social, behavioral, environmental and other factors for sperm concentration reduction in a clinic male group. Methods: Altogether 346 eligible patients were recruited from two andrology clinics. The social, behavioral, environmental and other characteristics were collected by constructed questionnaire investigation. All subjects were undertaken semen quality and external genital tract examination. Results: The median of sperm concentration was 65.49×106/ml and 62 (17.92%) subjects were diagnosed as oligospermia. The risk of oligospermia was associated with alcohol consumption (OR: 2.80, CI: 1.60–4.95), years living in Shanghai city (OR: 4.22, CI: 1.65–14.29), sedentary work (OR: 3.27, CI: 1.58–6.60) and gas use (OR: 2.24, CI: 1.00–4.73). In addition, the ordered multiple classification logistic regression models were used to analyze the sperm concentration and the findings showed that the sperm concentration reduction trend was related to alcohol consumption (OR: 2.00, CI: 1.24–3.23), years living in Shanghai city (OR: 2.49, CI: 1.40–4.44), sedentary work (adjusted OR: 1.69, CI: 1.01–2.82), bathroom shared with others or not (OR: 0.53, CI: 0.28–0.99), air-conditioner use (OR: 1.91, CI: 1.00–3.65), testis volume (OR: 0.92, CI: 0.88–0.97) and genital tract infection (OR: 0.40, CI: 1.02–2.51). Conclusion: Social economic status, lifestyle and environmental factors have influence on sperm concentration reduction. Next study on quantitative effects of home electric appliances on semen qualtiy is under investigation. (platform)
