Abstract

The authors examine variations in perinatal mortality rates among the various health areas of England and attempt to identify the extent to which these variations are related either to varying characteristics of the area populations or varying quality of health care services. Data are for the years 1974-1976. The major determinant of inter-area variation is variation in birth weight which is in turn strongly determined by economic disadvantage. (ANNOTATION)
