Abstract

A study of the social and economic positions of women in Iran requires some knowledge of the major economic characteristics of the country and the changes which took place in that society between 1956 and 1978. While a detailed account is beyond the scope of this chapter describes a brief summary of Iranian economic development during that period is in order. More capital intensive methods of production, movement of labor from low to high productivity sectors, and diminishing importance of the agricultural sector are the common changes which take place in the early stages of economic development. The public sector's priorities for economic growth were carried out through five medium-term development programs, ending in 1978. The rapid changes in the economy naturally affected the economic and social positions of women. The government encouraged the passage of various measures by Parliament to improve the condition of women in the family.
