Sobre la existencia de una celda de circulación atmosférica sobre el Caribe y su efecto en las corrientes de Ekman del Caribe suroccidental

Abstract

Research on the atmospheric and ocean dynamics of the Colombian Basin of the Caribbean Sea was carried out on the basis of historical climatic data, in situ observations and remotely sensed measurements made during the period 1992 - 1999. An atmospheric zonal cell, composed of the easterly Trade winds, near-surface convergence and rising over the Central American landmass, the westerly winds at the 200 hPa level, and divergence and sinking in the centre of the Caribbean Sea. The Trade winds take the form of a seasonally varying low-level jet in the central Caribbean that produces Ekman currents up to 1 Sv which surface direction is the Cayman Basin.
