Abstract

The priest Alexandre de Gusmao (1629-1724) was an important Jesuit leadership from Brazil of 17th and 18th centuries. Over the catechetical texts and sermons, leave us the Arte de criar bem os filhos na idade da puericia, book published for the first time in Lisbon in 1685. It was written in the middle of puissance climate in the education and catechetical Jesuit, the work shows brilliantly the peculiar Jesuit educational philosophy. Add to that, it is the first written work in Brazil that is concern with childhood theme. His educational and religion vision are narrowly linked. Take good care of children certainly is an indicative of parents Christian manners to him. The analyses presents that Alexandre de Gusmao developed in this work a thought about civility, texts with particular styles written about educational theme, take care of children and oneself, questions of great profusion in that age. The style, or gender, was developed from Erasmus of Rotterdam’s ideas (1466/69-1536), specially the De civilitate morum puerilium, published in 1530
