Abstract

Many diseases affect the population of Appalachian Kentucky, but none more than heart disease. The purpose of this article is to address the alarmingly high prevalence of heart disease in the Appalachian region of Kentucky and to provide evidence-based methods for reducing its incidence and management. This is an issue of astronomical importance as people living in Appalachian Kentucky have the worst cardiovascular risk profile in the USA. The first section of this article provides succinct clarification of how heart disease afflicts this region and the area-specific variables affecting it. The second section illustrates a more in-depth background of heart disease through a social and economic perspective. Research shows many promising benefits of utilizing a comprehensive strategic initiative for reducing heart disease; therefore, the third section will evaluate the proposed solution, the Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) strategic model, for reducing the incidence of heart disease in Appalachian Kentucky. The significant need for change within this underserved region is imperative and must be recognized and addressed immediately.
