Abstract

AbstractSoapless emulsion polymerization of n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) was carried out through microwave heating with potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator at 73 ± 2°C. The influence of the monomer amount, the initiator amount, and the addition of ethanol on the monomer conversion, the particle size, and its distribution were studied. The results indicate that microwave polymerization had a much higher rate and produced smaller particles with a slightly broader size distribution compared with normal polymerization. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
