Abstract

Twelve Achilles tendons from fresh autopsy material were dissected because of the surprisingly frequent reference to inflammation in a synovial sheath in this situation. Normally a synovial sheath is not present around the Achilles tendon and this was confirmed by the dissections, but a significant finding was the degree to which the distal soleal muscle fibres formed a large part of the thickness of the Achilles tendon behind the ankle. In injury to the tendon in athletes as a result of overuse, avulsion of some of these lowest soleal muscle fibre bundles from the anterior surface of the tendon is probably a significant factor in symptomatology.
