Abstract

Scientific evidence determines validity in all health activities. Previous studies have shown the existence of favourable scientific evidence for acupuncture. Currently, due to opinion bias or misinformation, acupuncture is intended to be classified as a pseudoscience. This study is justified by the need to update and demonstrate the scientific evidence for the indications of medical acupuncture in the management of certain health conditions. A non-systematic review of recent publications covering mechanisms of action, main medical indications and clinical practice guidelines is carried out. Only studies with the highest level of evidence are included, such as systematic reviews, meta-analysis, overviews and, in some conditions, randomized controlled studies. The results are arranged in tables to facilitate access to the published scientific evidence for specific conditions. It is concluded that acupuncture is a technical medical procedure with a high level of scientific evidence and cannot be considered a pseudoscience.
