Abstract

Parsonage-Turner syndrome (PTS) is a rare disorder characterized by sudden shoulder pain followed by neurologic deficits. The exact etiology remains unclear, although a genetic predisposition is suspected in association with a trigger. The diagnosis is made clinically, supported by electrodiagnostic and imaging studies. There is no specific treatment, and the prognosis is generally favorable. This case-report relates to an 18-year-old competitive swimmer who developed left shoulder pain after a flu-like illness, resulting in a deficit of muscle strength and sensitivity. She was diagnosed at PTS and treated with corticosteroids and an individualized rehabilitation program, resulting in resolution of the condition within 6 months. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent long-term sequelae and allow a quicker return to sports activities.
