Abstract

Malabsorption syndrome refers to any disorder (congenital or acquired) that alters the proper assimilation of nutrients and micronutrients along the digestive tract. It is a very broad concept that generally encompasses the terms malabsorption and maldigestion. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms vary greatly and are related to alterations in the normal function of the intestinal, gastric, or biliopancreatic systems. This gives rise to either specific or global defects, with diverse clinical and analytical manifestations which are often not very specific. Thus, the proper diagnostic approach and treatment is a challenge in daily clinical practice.
