Abstract

The peripheral autonomic nervous system (PANS) functions to maintain homeostasis of the internal body environment. Dysregulation of the PANS alters the functions of the cardiovascular, genito-urinary, skin, and gastrointestinal systems. Dysautonomia can occur independently or in coincidence with other diseases, such as synucleinopathies. Despite similar manifestations across many conditions, research points to a variety of pathophysiological mechanisms involving development, malfunction, and neurodegeneration.
