Abstract

Snake venom database (SVDB), an automated customized, subject specific, non-redundant generic data repository built to communicate with and extract all snake venom, toxins and venom components related information from millions of data that can be accessed through NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information). SVDB has been structured with flexibility, expandability and ensures easy access of authentic, non-redundant, up-to-date information to users of all categories. All related scientific data from literature, taxonomy to sequence (genomic/gene/nucleotide/protein), structure (protein 3D/toxins/ small molecules) and phylogeny can be accessed through this most comprehensive portal in a very user friendly manner. Information regarding all about snake/venom/toxin resources together with computational data analysis tools like BLAST, Phylogeny, Swiss-model has been linked to the SVDB platform. Snake venom components have major roles in therapeutic medicine. Correctly cataloging, labeling and connecting sequences with structural and functional annotation of genes and proteins of various toxins are crucial to understand their mechanisms of actions. Experimental results have shown that SVDB can efficiently crawl and display snake venom related data compared to the NCBI search. The database is free and publicly available at https://www.snakevenomdb.org.
