Abstract

From the anthropological perspective the main functions of music can be described as communicative, emotional, integrative and aesthetic. Additionally music has numerous other functions such as: informative, reviving, creative, stimulating, motivating, contestative, condemning and testimonial. In music of nueva cancion movement in Latin America in the 60s and the 70s the testimonial function is of particular importance – the same function is also typical of folk music, and used to express social commitment. The same is true of the music created by the American folk revival movement. The aim of the article is to show that the use of the testimonial function is an element that connects folk music with various types of engaged music.
