Abstract
Boundary value problems for hyperbolic linear partial differential integral equations of convolution type on an interval are studied. A necessary and sufficient condition on the convolution kernel is given such that discontinuities of the boundary data are smoothed in the interior of the interval. The result is applied to consider dynamics of viscoelastic media.
