Abstract

Monte Carlo histograms with statistical fluctuations and without proper mathematical modelling are often used to analyse experimental data. A procedure to smooth one and two-dimensional histograms is described which uses a diffusion-like information exchange between neighboring bins to average over statistical fluctuations. The procedure is steered by two parameters which control the fraction of the total histogram content to be used in the local averaging process.
