Abstract

This article discusses two children's picture books: Smoky Night (1994), by Eve Bunting, illustrator, David Diaz and The House that Crack Built (1992), by Clark Taylor, illustrator Jan Thompson Dicks. The books deal with the Los Angeles riots and the use and distribution of crack cocaine. These books are didactic and deal with violence. Descriptions of classroom use and story backgrounds are provided. Critics' responses are also analyzed. The article's author concludes that each book treats important issues with sensititvity and honesty and is engaging, even when dealing with controversial topics in a didactic framework.
