Abstract

This chapter starts by discussing tobacco addiction, and the physiological effects of smoking on the respiratory syndrome. It lists the lung diseases and other non-respiratory diseases caused by smoking. It gives examples of the health benefits of smoking cessation, and potential pharmacological treatments to aid quitting. Different types of nicotine replacement therapy are outlined, with different options for the number of cigarettes the patient smokes per day. Non-nicotine-based pharmacotherapy is also included, and the role of the nurse in smoking cessation is described. Respiratory health surveillance in the workplace is outlined, as well as issues with respiratory health that may arise in housing, such as damp, overcrowding, and the presence of asbestos. Environmental factors, income, and respiratory disease, and the role of nutrition and obesity are all covered.
