Abstract

Healthy cells in smokers’ lungs have a high burden of mutations, similar to the mutational profile of lung cancer. Surprisingly, ex-smokers’ lungs have a large fraction of healthy cells with nearly normal profiles. Ex-smokers’ lungs have a large fraction of cells with few mutations.
