Abstract
Ytterbium smoke particles were produced by the gas evaporation method in an argon atmosphere. In addition to the typical shapes of fcc metal particles such as twinned or non-twinned truncated octahedra and icosahedron, morphological shapes which have not yet been studied for other fcc smoke particles were found. The size of the particle was much larger than the value found in other fcc metals. After the irradiation of these particles by a high electron dose, hollow Yb 2O 3 particles were obtained.
