Abstract

The meaning of life is a profound philosophical question that directs and determines the course of human life. In fact, every individual has, within their subconscious, a certain, but not always deliberately worded answer, to the question of the meaning of life. 'Allamah Tabataba'i, a contemporary Islamic philosopher and the author of Al-Mizan, the famous commentary on Qur'an, puts forward authentic ideas needed to solve the problem of the meaning of human life as well as an original approach to the matter concerned from the aspects of Islamic belief. 'Allamah Tabataba'i is the most influential representative of Transcendent Theosophy in the contemporary philosophical thought in Islam. In his opinion, human life takes on meaning through science, knowledge, commitment to ethics and human behaviour, through accepting responsibility within religious traditions and, in short, through believing in God, that is, monotheistic beliefs. As opposed to this, the fruits of Western modernism and forgetting oneself, materialistic approach to the truth, ignorance of man's ontological position, distance from God and anthropocentrism are the main factors of meaningless and futile life.
