Abstract

The suffix -CI is one of the suffixes with the highest degree of functionality among the suffixes that make noun from the noun. The functions of the –CI suffix are listed as performing a task continuously, “the person related to the job determined by the noun and the person who has taken as a job a duty from the nouns, ownership, adopting an opinion, a belief, a thought, profession and occupation, place names such as district, neighborhood, street, village, people who have habits or who like to consume certain foods and beverages”. When the affixes are examined morphologically and morpho-semantically, it is seen that they have morpho-semantic functions of the suffix. Apart from the listed morpho-semantic functions, it has also been observed that the suffix has different morpho-semantic functions. In this study, it is aimed to distinguish between morphological function and morpho-semantic. Although morphological function and morpho-semantic function are related to each other, there are some differences between them. The morphological function is defined as the grammatical function of the language unit, which determines the form and structure; the morpho-semantic function is defined as the service that the language unit provides for meaning where it comes from. Evaluating suffixes under the heading of function both limits the use of suffixes and leads to wrong derivations. The formal features of the suffixs are kept in the foreground, that them the meanings add to the words are mentioned superficially and not sufficiently emphasized in grammar books. In this context, the importance of the morpho-semantic functions of the suffix will be shown in the study. In our study, the morpho-semantic functions of the words with –CI suffix were shown from the Güncel Türkçe Sözlük and the scanned works. The number of examined morpho-semantic functions may increase according to the usage examples, but it is limited according to the examples found in the scanned works.
