Abstract

A type-1 diabetic patient needs an exogenous insulin dose based on the blood glucose level to avoid hyper/hypoglycemia. In this paper, we propose a control system for maintaining the blood glucose level of type −1 diabetic patients within the normal range. The proposed protocol consists of a Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) and a controller. The WBAN senses blood glucose and insulin concentration at regular intervals. The controller takes meal quantity as an input and estimates the maximum glucose level. The estimated glucose level is further used to predict the required insulin dose considering the patient-specific insulin sensitivity information. This insulin dose is then injected into the patient using an insulin pump. The proposed protocol is helpful for self-monitoring and automatic controlling of blood glucose level for type-1 diabetic patients.
