Abstract
In an era of smart living, people strive to innovate existing technologies to achieve the concept of smart city. Street lighting systems is one of them. Most urban, towns and semiurban cities still use conventional lighting systems. Current lighting systems use compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) with combination of high pressure sodium lamps to provide illumination. But the conventional use leads to huge demand and wastage of electricity between 20 to 40% of the total energy produced. Although a single unit of lighting consumes less power, their enormous quantity and long hours of operation requires more energy. So, energy saving is an essential need for smart lighting systems. Energy efficiency is achieved by this smart lighting system. It will provide light that varies intensity as per illumination requirement. There are water level sensors that will alert and send data of the increasing water levels in an area to authorities which can prove lifesaving during rains. There are emergency lights that would light up to warn of dangers or emergencies along the road. The LCD screens can be used to display statistics of available information. It will display weather forecast and emergency notifications. The smart street light that is deployed on a pole, also has provision to send alert for broken lights that requires maintenance. So, the proposed system will overcome all the drawbacks of conventional system and provide energy saving, smart alerting solutions.
